The Harms of Riba

Riba is the Arabic word for usury, meaning a lending fee. Riba is considered sinful because it involves charging interest on a loan and is therefore considered an unethical practice that should be avoided. If a transaction involves riba, then the person receiving the money must pay a certain amount of interest in addition to the principal amount of the loan. This means that the lender receives payment in return for charging an interest rate on their investment. The practice of riba has also been shown to cause certain problems in society, such as increased inequality and led to the rise of predatory lending practices, which led to the financial crisis of 2007-2009. Thus, it is important to prevent the spread of riba in society and promote a more equitable economy. In terms of Islamic law, the Quran clearly forbids riba (usury), and scholars have agreed on this position throughout history.
